Numbers as the language of character

The Western numerology system commonly called "Pythagorean" uses a straightforward letter-to-number table: A=1, B=2, C=3… through I=9, then cycling back. Any name can be reduced to a number by adding its values together and reducing to a single digit (with exceptions for 11 and 22, the "master numbers").

Birth dates are reduced similarly: add the digits until you reach a single number. This produces the Life Path — the most important number in the system, describing the fundamental nature of the journey. The name produces additional numbers: the Expression (outer personality), the Soul Urge (inner motivation), and the Personality (the face shown to the world).

Reading the report

The Life Path is the starting point. A 1 person leads. A 4 person builds. A 9 person completes and releases. These broad archetypes are not deterministic — they describe a tendency, a frequency, a gravitational pull in the personality.

The interesting zone is often the tension between numbers. A Life Path of 1 (independence) with a Soul Urge of 2 (connection) describes someone driven to lead but privately craving deep partnership. These internal tensions are often where numerology readers find the most useful observations.

The Personal Year adds a temporal dimension: where is this year in the 9-year cycle? A 1 year is for beginnings. A 9 year is for endings and preparation. Most people find the current Personal Year the most immediately useful part of the report.
